读写训练:自然与环境(一)

Part 1 阅读理解
Passage 1

Sometimes, we remember our childhood neighborhood just as well, or even better than, our childhood homes. For both children and adults, neighborhoods are a place to play, learn, and make memories.

In the majority of US suburbs (市郊), almost everyone on the block knows each other. Coming home together on the bus is usually just the beginning of neighboring children spending time together. Whether it’s playing soccer or running after each other around on bikes, kids often take advantage of the daylight to get some fresh air outside. When it’s hot, children can jump in a pool together. And when it’s cold, they can have snowball fights with one another.

Adults also take advantage of living in a community by taking care of their neighbors. It’s convenient for neighbors to become friends, considering that they live so close together. Neighbors will often babysit (临时照看婴孩) or dog-sit for each other.

If someone holds a party, neighbors might lend some space for guests to park their cars in. And if a postal worker mixes up the mail, neighbors are more than happy to return it back to its rightful owner. Having kind and caring neighbors can make a world of difference in how a person thinks of their home. To some people, a home may not be just the house they live in, but also the community they’re a part of.

Neighborhoods, just like homes, come in all different shapes and sizes. Some neighborhoods may have over 100 people, while others may only have a few people. But whatever the size, neighborhoods can be a powerful and memorable part of our lives, filled with neighbors we’ll always remember.

Passage 2

If you had billions of dollars, would you donate almost all of it to charity? That’s what Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, said he would do.

Many billionaires have done similar things. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, made The Giving Pledge. Billionaires who agree to this pledge promise to gradually give away more than half of their wealth to charities. This started in 2010 – so far, 211 people from 23 countries have agreed to it.

But giving back and helping others isn’t just for big billionaires. People like Zuckerberg and Gates may have more to give, but people with less are doing it too.

Especially around the holidays, people want to do their part and give back to people who are less fortunate (幸运的) than them. Schools may have food collections where people bring a few food items, and together they can make a big donation to places like homeless shelters (收容中心).

People also host special events like concerts or runs as a creative way of raising money. People also donate whatever they can to US charities like the United Way and the American Red Cross.

The charities are able to help communities in different ways, such as by improving schools, hospitals, or homeless shelters. These individual (单独的) donations come together to make a big difference.

Passage 3

Imagine this. You come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is already waiting for you at the door. It turns on the lights, air conditioner and television. While you are having dinner, it cleans the floor. Before you go to sleep, it tells you the weather report, then reads you a bedtime story. Alpha 2 can make all of these things possible – and perhaps even more. Alpha 2 was a star at the 2017 World Robot Conference.

More than 150 universities and companies from around the world brought their robots to the event. Some robots work in factories. Some robots can explore outer space (外太空) or the deep ocean. But the highlights (亮点) of the event were service (服务) robots.

This kind of robot is more useful for common tasks. From cleaning to teaching, music to sports, service robots have been used to do many kinds of jobs.

Teotronico is also a popular service robot, as well as an artist and music teacher. His 53 fingers allow him to play the piano. He played John Lennon’s song Imagine at the conference.

There is another service robot called Bestic. It acts as a human arm to feed people with a spoon. It can be a good helper for little kids, the elderly and those who have difficulty using their hands.
