British Man Arrested in Japan for Putting Trash in Mailbox

A British man was arrested on March 22 for throwing his trash into a mailbox in the town of Kamakura, just south of Tokyo. Anthony Tanaka, 37, said he thought the mailbox was a garbage can.

Tanaka was arrested by police officers outside Kamakura City Hall on suspicion of littering. Police say he put his empty bento box, some chopsticks and a plastic drink bottle into the mailbox, which — like all mailboxes in Japan — has the word “POST” on it in both Japanese and English.

Mailmen found trash in Kamakura mailboxes seven times between December 2020 and March 2021, which has damaged more than 150 letters and other mail.

Of those seven instances, three were in the mailbox outside City Hall where Tanaka was arrested. Police believe Tanaka may have put the trash in the other mailboxes, too.

Littering is taken very seriously in Japan, and those caught doing it can face up to five years in prison or receive a fine of up to 10 million yen, or about $90,000.

People who damage mail can also be put in prison for up to five years or be fined up to 500,000 yen, or about $4,600.

Cleaning up after yourself is part of Japanese culture, so although there are few garbage cans compared to other countries, the streets are often very clean as people typically take their trash home with them.
