Italian Alps glacier collapse: at least nine killed and more missing

At least nine people have died after a glacier① collapsed in Italy’s Dolomites region. Authorities believe a large chunk of alpine glacier broke loose on July 4 afternoon and sent ice, snow and rock slamming into hikers on a popular trail on the Marmolada peak. Emergency services spokeswoman Michela Cavona told AFP the total number of climbers affected was unknown because the glacier fall hit an access path at a time when there were several roped parties there, some of whom were swept away. The SUEM (Servizio Urgenza Emergenza Medica) dispatched service, based in the nearby Veneto region, said 18 people who were above the area where the ice struck would be evacuated by the rescue corps. It was not immediately clear what caused the section of ice to break away but the intense heatwave that has gripped② Italy since late June could be a factor. (The Guardian)

Climate protesters glue themselves to National Gallery artwork

At approximately 14:25 on Monday, 4 July, two young supporters of JUST STOP OIL stepped over a rope barrier keeping the public at the National Gallery in London a safe distance from The Hay Wain, by John Constable. They covered the 1821 oil painting with a dystopian reimagining of its bucolic① scene, before supergluing themselves to its ornate gilt frame, prompting staff to evacuate the room of the assembled art lovers, tourists and schoolchildren. Hannah Hunt, 23, who was sat beneath the painting wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “Just stop oil”, said: “I’m here because our government plans to license② 40 new UK oil and gas projects in the next few years.” Last week supporters of Just Stop Oil caused disruption in Glasgow, Manchester and London by gluing on to the frames of famous paintings including Van Gogh’s Peach Trees in Blossom, Thomson’s Aeolian Harp by JMW Turner and My Heart’s in the Highlands by Horatio McCulloch. After 40 years of extinction, rhinos return to Mozambique

Over four decades after they became extinct locally, rhinos are roaming again the wilds of Mozambique, which is bringing the endangered species from South Africa in efforts to breathe new life into its parks and boost local tourism. A group of rangers captured, sedated and moved black and white rhinos over 1,000 miles (1,610 km) to Mozambique’s Zinave National Park, which has over 400,000 hectares and more than 2,300 other reintroduced animals. “Rhinos are important to the ecosystem, which is one of the reasons why we’re moving them all this distance and doing all this effort to get them there,” Kester Vickery, a conservationist who is supervising the rhino translocation told Reuters. The Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) conservation group, which is conducting the operation, aims to relocate over 40 rhinos in the next two years to Mozambique. This initiative is a part of a campaign to save the endangered species by relocating them to safe havens where they have a chance to increase their population. (Reuters)

NASA makes contact with satellite that broke free of Earth’s orbit

NASA has reestablished contact with one of its satellites that stopped communicating on its way to the moon. Engineers were able to contact the tiny CubeSat on Wednesday after it ceased① communication with the Deep Space Network on Tuesday. The DSN is NASA’s radio antenna② network that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions as well as some orbiting Earth. The CubeSat is the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment, also known as CAPSTONE. The satellite left Earth’s orbit③ Monday, marking an important milestone on its planned four-month journey to the moon. The connection difficulties forced the mission team to delay the satellite’s first trajectory④ correction maneuver originally scheduled for July 5, NASA said. These are a series of planned corrections to increase the accuracy of the orbit transfer to the moon. After CAPSTONE successfully left Earth’s orbit, it started charging its onboard battery using solar arrays, according to an update from NASA. The CubeSat is waiting for the trajectory correction and remains on the overall intended course for its ballistic⑤ lunar transfer, NASA said. (CNN)

UK PM Johnson to step down

Boris Johnson resigned on Thursday as leader of Britain’s Conservative Party, paving the way for the selection of a new prime minister after dozens of ministers quit his scandal-hit government. “It is clearly the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party, and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said outside 10 Downing Street. Johnson, 58, announced that he would step down after a slew① of resignations from his top team in protest at his leadership but would stay on as prime minister until a replacement is found. The timetable for a Tory leadership race will be announced next week. The leadership election will take place over the summer and the victor will replace Johnson by the party’s annual conference in early October, the BBC and others reported. (The Global Times)

Japan ex-PM Abe assassinated while making election campaign speech

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving leader, died on July 8 hours after he was shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, shocking a country in which political violence is rare and guns are tightly controlled. A man opened fire on Abe, from behind with an apparently homemade gun as he spoke at a drab① traffic island② in the western city of Nara, Japanese media reported. Doctors struggled to save Abe but he died at 5:03 p.m., about five and a half hours after being shot. Police said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out③ the shooting had been arrested. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, told police he was dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him. “Such an act of barbarity cannot be tolerated,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Masuno told reporters.
